A very rare and important documented example of Jamaican furniture from the
19th century. Exquisitely constructed of thirty-one indigenous tropical woods,
including cashew, coconut, grapefruit and mahogany, encompassed by a speckled
bamboo border. This table was part of a larger suite of furniture that was made for
the second Marquis of Sligo (1788-1845), Governor of Jamaica (1834-1836), who
was charged with emancipating the
colonies' enslaved Africans and
African-West Indians.
