Sunburst bench/settee
Jamaica, 1810-30

This bench has typical Jamaican vernacular elements including one-board solid mahogany seat, turned legs and carved sunburst panel. In Jamaica, as in the coastal southern states, benches were common on the piazza (which, though outdoors, was one of the most utilized “rooms” in the house), but few have survived. This is a superior example
of its genre.
