Mahogany Sheraton Sideboard
Jamaica, 1810-35
40 ¾” s.h. (55”h b/s) x 48”w x 20 ¾”d
Excellent height and wonderfully executed vernacular elements typical of the “Creolization” of Jamaican furniture, which blossomed in this period. The reeded skirt has an unusual dip in its center instead of the more common target block. The backsplash is crowned by the rolling pin form (spool) more common in America than Jamaica. The cross-hatched blocks find other roots in the pineapple motif.
