French Sofa Signed M. Cresson
France, mid 18th c.

Michel Cresson was the youngest son
of Jean Cresson. In his workshop , "Au
Gros Chapelet", he made beautiful
seats in the style of Louis XV.These
were typically in the samestyle as the
work of his older brother, Loius Cresson
-- ofample proportions and not
ornately sculptured. However, some of
his works are abundantly decorated
such as the majestic Bergere chair,
complete with low feet adorned with
finely scultpet shells and foliage, which
was located recently in the collection
if Louis Guiraud. Before the death of
his brother Louis in 1761, MichelCresson
was commissioned to make chairs for
the prince de Conde at hisresidence in
Paris, the Palace Bourbon, and his
chateau in Chantilly.Several works
attributed to Michel Cresson entered the
Lourve in1989, including two couches and
two armchairs (with perfectly inscribed
woodwork), and two consoles. They
belonged to a number of exceptional pieces
of Cresson's work commissionedby the
Marquis de Sourches for his chateau
d' Abondant. Two armchairs of this group
were shown for sale in Paris on March 16,
1998 with the collection of Jacqueline
Delubac.
