Mahogany child's bed (3-3)
Jamaica, 1810-30

An unusual form which is proportionally smaller in all three planes than an adult bed and when found is usually considered to be a child’s bed. The bed is held together by pegs, which in Jamaica is found on early or later smaller bed such as this one. Stiffness on pegged beds in Jamaica is often added to by the middle slat that dovetails into the long rails—well demonstrated on this example. The posts feature the usual series of sequential rings. The headboard is bolted on to the back of the bed and has paneled and incised vernacular decoration. The bed retains its original slats numbered in Latin.
