Mahogany bed with four
tapered and carved posts (1-10)
Jamaica, 1790-1825
Multiple sequential rings, the basic element of Jamaican bedpost decoration, are here expressed without benefit of a lathe on tapered posts. The feet are beautifully scalloped. The headboard exhibits vernacular elements and compliments the posts. The lower plank is an early restoration. This bedstead is typical of plantation craftsmanship and/or early manufacture. Because they have been historically ignored, survival of these beds intact is unusual, and now they are highly prized.
